VIRUDHUNAGAR: In a heart-warming gesture, police personnel from nine districts of South Zone donated ₹ 66.31 lakh to the family members of constable V. Sankar, who was gored by a bull to death while on duty at a bull chase event held near Srivilliputtur on January 23.
Inspector General of Police S. Murugan handed over the cheques to family members in the presence of Deputy Inspector General of Police (Madurai Range) Anand Kumar Somani, and Virudhunagar Superintendent of Police M. Rajarajan.
Following an appeal from the South Zone IG, Mr. Murugan, for voluntary donation, police personnel from nine districts generously donated funds for the family of Sankar, who is survived by his wife Muthusadachi (24), son Gurupandi (2) and daughter Sadhana (1).
Sankar was killed when he attempted to save a tamer, Arumugam, who was being attacked by a bull at the manju virattu held at Kansapuram near Watrap. He sustained bleeding injuries on his neck and was rushed to the Government Rajaji hospital in Madurai, but died on the way.
The money was deposited in a nationalised bank in Watrap in the names of Muthusadachi (₹ 16.31 lakh), Gurupandi (₹ 25 lakh) and Sadhana (₹ 25 lakh), so that the family got a monthly interest for sustenance.
Virudhunagar district police donated the highest amount of ₹ 12.46 lakh, followed by Tirunelveli district ₹ 10.02 lakh and Ramanathapuram district ₹ 8.50 lakh.
