Madurai: A police constable Deivendran ended his life after he saw his wife Santhalakshmi hanging dead in the employees’ quarters attached to Kalimangalam Primary Health Centre near here on Tuesday.

The police said that the couple, married for five years, had been quarrelling for long. Deivendran, a 2003-batch constable, woke up to see Santhalakshmi dead in the bedroom, in the early hours.

He had made calls to some of his relatives about the suicide of Santhalakshmi, who was a village health nurse. The police said that he had told his brother of his intention to end his life.

When relatives rushed to their home, they found the body of the woman left on the cot and the constable hanging dead. Their son was being brought up by his grandparents at Muthukalathoor, the police said. The Karuppayoorani police are investigating.

People with suicidal tendency can call the toll-free State helpline 104 for counselling to overcome the tendency.
