The city police on Saturday arrested a 27-year-old man on charges of cheating Rs.35 lakh from several persons by offering job with Indian Railways.

The arrested was identified as P. Shameem, a native of Hosdurg in Kasaragod district.

The cheating came to light in a probe based on the petition filed by a Kottarakkara native before the City Police Commissioner. The accused had collected Rs.13 lakh from the woman by promising to arrange a job in the Railways.

“The accused introduced himself as Railway Vigilance Officer and the team member of a famous football team and pretended to be very close to some very well known sports personalities,’’ officials said.

While staying at a hotel in the city, the accused had duped Rs.4 lakh of an employee of the hotel promising job with the Railways.

During a raid at his apartment in Kaloor, the police found he had been using a fake employment letter of Southern Railway Recruitment Board to convince the victims

Shameem was living in a flat at Kaloor with a woman named Anu who has gone into hiding. Shameem had served a term in Poojappura Central Prison in connection with a similar case probed by the Crime Branch.

He was produced in the court and remanded in custody.
