Youth drowns in river

A man drowned in the Periyar River near Bhoothathankettu around 4.30 p.m. on Friday. Akhil Sukumaran, 20, son of Sukumaran of Thachetuparambil House near Lisie Hospital at Kaloor, was killed when he lost footing in the river. Akhil, who was a B.Sc. student at RU College at Pallikkara, had gone to the tourist spot with nine of his friends in the evening. He fell into the river and was swept away. His friends alerted people nearby, who called the police and launched a rescue effort. Local residents and the police pulled out the body in a few minutes, but he had lost his life by then.

Bus shelter attacked

Unidentified miscreants vandalised a modern bus shelter that was under construction at Nettoor near Lakeshore Hospital on Thursday night. Maradu municipality chairman T.K. Devarajan said the bus shelter, being built with the approval of the National Highways Authority of India, was in the last phase of its construction. A glass pane on one side of the shelter had been smashed using hard objects.
