KOCHI: The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Ernakulam on Wednesday arrested a youth on the charge of drug peddling and seized nearly 1.5 kg of ganja from him.
The arrested is M.H. Moideen, 21, a native of Madhur, Kasaragod. An employee at a hotel in Kochi, he used to traffic ganja from Kasaragod to Kochi. He was arrested by a special team deployed to stop smuggling of narcotics through trains.
“During interrogation, Moideen said the contraband was handed over to him by a gang in Kasaragod. The gang had also promised to give him ₹2,000 for smuggling it to Kochi,” officials said.
The police have received definite leads about the gang members, and efforts are on to arrest them with the help of the Karnataka Police.
For the record, the railway enforcement agencies had seized around 25 kg of ganja in 2015 and another 40 kg of the contraband the following year.
Enforcement agencies have specific information on the operation of rackets in States like West Bengal. The rackets are engaged in transporting banned tobacco products, cheap quality ganja, and psychotropic drugs to Kerala.
The carriers of these rackets leave railway station premises through unauthorised exit points after staying at the platform for a long time to evade police surveillance.
