Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) is set to make a harvest from the trial farming of Litopenaeus Vannamei, an exotic white-legged shrimp, at its Regional Station in Puthuveyp on Saturday.

Fisheries Minister K Babu will inaugurate the harvest festival at 9.30 a. m., said a press release here.

KUFOS started trial farming of vannamei shrimp, the first of its kind in Kerala, in March, after getting the licence from the Coastal Aquaculture Authority (CAA), Chennai.

A lakh of specific pathogen-free seeds of vannamei were released into four ponds in varying densities.

The pilot culture is being conducted for developing a model farming system of vannamei suitable for the brackish water ecosystem in Kerala. The pilot farming is also aimed at evolving farming practices for the species.

The farming units followed the prescriptions and protocols set by CAA and a group of experts, last month, reviewed the status of the farm and found it to be headed towards success, the press release claimed.
