In a couple of months, LPG tankers operating along the State’s roads are likely to get safety features including anti-lock braking system (ABS) and GPS-driven vehicle tracking system (VTS).
The tender floated jointly by oil companies is expected to be finalised by the end of this month.
The new tender provides for exhaustive safety provisions such as making ABS and VTS compulsory, and designating two drivers as recommended by the State government, oil company sources told The Hindu .
Once the system is in place, tankers without the requisite safety parameters will not be engaged for transportation.
Asked whether the decision to make safety features mandatory had drawn any kind of opposition from the tanker operators, sources said there was no reason for heartburn as they would compensate for the investment in their rates. For installing VTS, transporters have to place a gadget inside the vehicle. The gadget will help monitor the movement of vehicles.
Approximately, 400 gas tankers ply for oil companies along the State’s roads. Fitting the tankers with safety features is expected to reduce the rate of risk involved in the movement of LPG to some extent.
