Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who visited the house of Jerin Michael who died allegedly due to medical negligence on Saturday at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, has asked the government to provide financial help to the next of kin of the victim.

MLAs of Aluva and Kalamassery, Anwar Sadat and V.K. Ibrahim Kunju, have also urged the government to provide aid for the youth’s family. Mr. Sadat had stated that an amount of ₹10 lakh should be given to the family.

Jerin’s funeral was held on Tuesday at Cherupushpam convent cemetery, Madalimukku, near the medical college.

Jerin’s death had caused tension in the medical college on Monday when a male nurse was attacked by a violent crowd. A section of nurses and other staff on Tuesday held a protest against the violence on the medical college premises, demanding the invocation of the Hospital Protection Act and action against those involved in the incident.

It is learnt that the professors probing the death would have to wait for a full histopathological report before arriving at a conclusion about the incident.

Infrastructure issues

According to sources in the medical college, the issue of lack of infrastructure such as the non-availability of a stretcher and non-functional lifts remain unresolved.

The ultrasound scan department functions only up to 3 p.m. in the medical college.

For all emergencies in the night, scanning has to be done outside.
