National Marine Fisheries Census from April 16

A month-long National Marine Fisheries Census 2010 will commence on April 16 in all maritime States in the country and would cover 10.98 lakh fishermen families spread across 4,050 fishing hamlets in the country.

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will commence the exercise, an official release said here on Monday.

Information relating to the marine fisherfolk of the country will be collected which includes total number of marine fishermen, their crafts and gears, socio economic profile, demographic features and behavioural parameters. The last census was held in 2005.
