Aimed at enabling transit-oriented development (TOD) around 36 boat jetties envisaged under the integrated water transport development project in greater-Kochi area, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) managing director Elias George and other key officials working on the project will call on representatives of local bodies and make a presentation on its salient features.

The first visit is scheduled to Kadamakudy on Monday. They will also conduct discussions with stakeholders of six panchayats, four municipalities and the Kochi Corporation in whose jurisdiction the jetties for Metro Aqua will be located.

The talks will cover aspects such as jetty locations and appurtenant facilities including the potential for commercial development, land needed for jetties, bettering road connectivity to jetties and their lighting, dredging if required, integrating Metro Aqua with the panchayat’s development plan and providing technical expertise to improve the quality of each panchayat’s infrastructure development plan, says a KMRL press release.

“The initiative is part of KMRL’s goal of improving the public transportation network in the greater-Kochi region. It also seeks to improve livelihoods in the coastal areas along the backwaters and the islands by improving jetties and key connecting roads and street lighting. Electric/CNG buses too have been mooted to connect boat jetties with other transit systems such as metro rail and buses,” Mr. George said.
