The district administration has decided to conduct joint inspections to evict the illegal occupants of the NGO Quarters in the district.

A meeting chaired by District Collector P.I. Sheikh Pareeth here on Monday decided to form a group of members of revenue and Public Works Department (PWD) officials for the eviction drive. The decision comes in the wake of complaints that the quarters were being illegally held by officers retired or transferred from the district.

Notices asking to produce relevant documents on a specific date will be affixed outside the quarters found locked during the inspection.

The veracity of the details presented by the occupants will be confirmed in consultation with the departments concerned. Irregularities will be reported to the higher levels. Quarters that remain unoccupied after being allotted on application will be sealed. Occupants for more than 10 years should register afresh with the department concerned at the collectorate.

Mr. Pareeth said occupants who had a house in their name or in the name of their spouse within the 20-kilometer radius of the office would be evicted.

PWD officials said the Kerala Water Authority had been refusing fresh connections to the quarters on account of pending bills to the tune of Rs.3.20 crore.

KWA is refusing water connection despite installing separate meters for individual quarters. This has hindered the move to impose charges based on independent meter reading. At present, only Rs.20 is being collected a month from each quarters towards water charges.
