Damodaran, veteran leader of Punnapra-Vayalar uprising passes away

Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, freedom fighter and leader of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising, S.Damodaran died after a brief illness at a private hospital here on Friday morning. He was 91.

Mr. Damodaran entered politics at an age of 13 through the agitation organised by the Travancore State Congress. He represented Mararikulam assembly constituency for two terms from 1967 to 1977. He served as president of Mannencherry grama panchayat for 12 years and of Aryad panchayat for 20 years. He was also the chairman of Coir Board.

His body will be kept for public to pay obeisance at his residence in Aryad at 4 p.m. on Saturday. He will be laid to rest at Valiya Chudukkad, the resting place of Communist leaders, here at 12 noon on Sunday.

Speaker of the Kerala Assembly, G. Karthikeyan and Minister for Culture and Rural Development, K.C. Joseph have condoled the death of Mr. Damodaran, a Public Relations Department release issued in Alappuzha said.
