The Kozhikode block panchayat, which recently secured ISO 9001-2015 certification for quality management system, has announced biodiversity mapping as its immediate priority.

The project blueprint will be tabled for approval in the panchayat council in a couple of months. Besides seeking State government aid, the panchayat will strive to pool Plan funds to complete the mapping process.

Block panchayat president N. Manoj Kumar said the aim was to complete the mapping process by the end of 2017-18 fiscal. “We will have a registry of all the biological resources and it will be digitalised,” he added.

The block panchayat has taken up the mapping project buoyed by the successful completion of quality improvement programmes for streamlining governance and improving public interactions. It is the first block panchayat in Kozhikode district to secure the ISO certification.

“The mapping was planned mainly to identify endangered flora and fauna within the block panchayat limits and to adopt better management plans,” said Mr. Manoj.

An aquatic bio-park within the block panchayat limits will be considered on completion of the biodiversity mapping work.

The local body is also striving to complete a series of innovative projects to win the title of disabled-friendly block panchayat.
