An 80-year-old woman sustained injuries after she tripped and fell down from the escalator at the Ernakulam South Railway Station on Wednesday. The incident took place around 2.30 p.m. when Subbammal and her 45-year-old daughter, natives of Lakkidi, were on their way to catch the Ernakulam-Palakkad MEMU. “The old lady stepped on the escalator with a bag but soon tripped and fell down. Blood began oozing out from her right hand even as her daughter, unmindful of her mother, approached the police with a complaint that her bag had gone missing,” said a railway police officer. The bag fell on the escalator and was returned to the old woman. Other commuters along with some railway staff gave first aid to the old woman. The railway police were seen advising the daughter to take good care of her mother. “After all, the bag contained only Rs.500 and a mobile phone,” said one official. –Staff Reporter
