Excise officials on Tuesday arrested two persons on charge of smuggling in 117 litres of brandy from Mahe after chasing down a sedan in which it was being carried during the course of vehicle checking at Muvattupuzha on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Shemil, 23, a resident of Puthiyapalam in Kozhikode and Ramshad, 20, from Areekkod, Kozhikode. They were produced before the Muvattupuzha Judicial First Class Magistrate court and the car was kept under the custody of the Deputy Excise Commissioner.
A team of officials from the Muvattupuzha Excise Range office was engaged in the vehicle check at the direction of the Deputy Excise Commissioner P. Jayarajan and Assistant Excise Commissioner M.J. Joseph when they intercepted the smuggled liquor from the Union Territory.
A chase was set in motion when the person behind the wheel of the sedan ignored the officials’ signal to stop at Vazhappilly on the M.C. Road. Officials had to chase the car for almost two kilometres before intercepting it at Kacherithaazham.
According to officials, the accused were handed over the consignment along with the car by a resident of Thodupuzha.
He, reportedly, owns the car as well. They were just carriers and were supposed to deliver the consignment at Thodupuzha.
