A three-member gang allegedly trying to extort ₹ 1 crore from a nursing home management were arrested by Saidabad police here on Monday.

The accused were identified as R Sandeep Kumar (36), D Anil (26), a compounder and G Balakishan (27) a lab technician, both working at Sri Gayathri Nursing Home at Singareni colony here.

Saidabad inspector K. Sattaiah said that on February 5 the trio, claiming themselves as journalists from a vernacular news channel and a District Medical and Health officer, called up the managing director of the nursing home Dr. Rachana Singh Thakur stating that they gathered evidences on the irregularities taking place in their nursing home and demanded ₹ 1 crore for not broadcasting the news channel.

“When Dr Thakur and her husband Dr Kiran Kumar told the accused that they cannot afford such a huge amount and asked them not to telecast the news, the trio started negotiating and demanded at least ₹ 25 lakh,” he said.

The doctor couple suspected foul play and approached the police, lodging a complaint against the unknown persons calling them for ransom.

Based on their complaint, a case was registered and the trio were apprehended on Monday on charges of blackmailing and demanding money.
