Film personalities Amala and Nagarjuna Akkineni have set an example for celebrities and others in tapping solar power for domestic energy requirements by installing a 6-KW roof-top off-grid solar power system.
Encouraged by the recent changes in the State government’s policy to tap renewable energy, particularly solar power, the celebrity couple got the solar panels installed on the roof-top of their house to meet their requirement of power to a large extent.
The newly-installed system by Anu World Solar Power connects all installations run on electricity including refrigeration, air coolers, lighting system, fans, television sets and outdoor security lighting.
The couple are not using the electricity supplied by the government for these domestic needs.
Only our air-conditioners and home theatre system were being run on the power supply from the grid as they were used sparingly, the Akkineni couple said. The solar power being tapped now also had a four-hour back up even after the sunset, they said.
They had planned to tap the abundant natural resource for long but harnessing solar power was delayed due to technical difficulties, cost limitations and shortages of solar panels. Limited wattage use and or less back up facility combined with higher cost of generation were among other reasons, they explained.
But a change in the government’s policy and acute power shortage this year prompted them to go for solar power, they said.
