An honorary consulate office of the South American country of Suriname was opened in the city on Friday.

Announcing the opening of the office here on Friday, Honorary Consul Asif Iqbal highlighted the potential of strengthening of ties between India and Suriname in various areas. Hyderabad, he added, is one of the locations selected for the Indo-Surinamese Furniture Design Corridor. Under the project, timber from Suriname would be shaped into furniture pieces, under the guidance of National Institute of Design professionals, and shipped to various locations in South America for sale. Noting that trade delegations and official exploratory trips to Suriname were proposed to be organised by the Honorary Consulate in October, Mr. Iqbal said a few companies had already invested in projects in that country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he added, is expected to visit Suriname in December.
