All the colonies constructed under the urban housing schemes such as JNNURM and Rajiv Gruha Kalpa (RGK) might be provided with community-owned shopping complexes in future, if the experiment to be initiated soon in the RGK Colony at Ahmedguda of Keesara mandal works well.

A complex will be constructed with 24 shops, according to J. Srinivasa Reddy, Project Officer (Ranga Reddy), Rajiv Grukha Kalpa. Besides, space will be allotted for 10 more shops with walls and open roof, so as to facilitate selling of vegetables, and meat. Part of the premises might be allotted for the Fair Price Shops too.

The shops would be allotted through auction once in two years, and the proceeds from the auction would be deposited in a bank account jointly operated by the Revenue Divisional Officer, Panchayat Secretary and the secretary of the colony welfare association, Mr. Reddy said. The amount thus accumulated would be used as corpus for maintenance of the housing colony.

The RGK Colony at Ahmedguda was constructed by the government in 2008-09 with a total of 4,512 flats of which 3,899 flats were handed over to the beneficiaries.

Depending on the success of the experiment, it might be implemented in all the 12 RGK colonies in Ranga Reddy district, Mr. Reddy said.
