The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation, which will formally come into being on May 28, will hike bus fares to overcome losses on account of the recent pay revision to staff and diesel prices going up.

The charges will be increased after discussions at meetings but the quantum has not been decided, Transport Minister P. Mahender Reddy told reporters after the launch of the logo of the corporation and introduction of ‘Palle Velugu’ buses connecting rural areas.

Mr. Reddy said though the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh corporations would function as different entities from May 28, the division of their assets would take sometime. The assets will be divided on ‘as is where is’ basis.

The government has sanctioned Rs. 150 crore for the purchase of 500 buses of all types, which will hit the roads shortly.

Nearly Rs. 70 crore will be spent within a week to purchase air-conditioned and Volvo buses.

He also said 1,300 villages in Telangana where RTC did not operate services had been identified. The services will be introduced in the villages shortly. At the same time, air-conditioned services will be operated from every Assembly constituency headquarters to Hyderabad.
