A portion of the main road opposite the Jalagam Vengal Rao Park in Banjara Hills caved in leading to traffic chaos in addition to the heavy downpour on Friday morning.
Top municipal officials and the traffic police rushed to the site on receipt of information. While the latter began to handle the stranded vehicles and to divert the traffic coming from Punjagutta and Banjara Hills, the GHMC officials led by Engineer-in-Chief R. Dhan Singh, Chief Engineer K. Suresh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Sakala Reddy got into the job of carrying out the repairs.
Storm water drain
The municipal officials felt that the road portion could have collapsed because of a recent tunnelling work taken up for laying a new storm water drain and the heavy rains in the last couple of days could have led to the soil giving away near the footpath.
Men and machinery from the Central Zone as well as from the central emergency teams are at work.
The repair work is slated to be completed by night and traffic could be allowed on the damaged road portion on the weekend, they said.
It was only in August that a similar road caved in happened on the super busy Punjagutta road near the Model House throwing the entire traffic haywire for a couple of days and diversions for a few days more till the restoration work was done.
Incidentally, it was also the result of a nearby tunnelling work for a storm water drain.
