The Municipal Corporation, which regularly carries out mosquito density studies in various parts of the city by collecting the insects and calculates their density by numbers, has found high density of mosquitoes along the River Musi belt.

The mosquito hotspots include Circle Eight areas of Jambagh, Gunfoundry, Sultan Bazaar, Himayatnagar, Barkatpura, Kachiguda, Golnaka, Amberpet and Environs Plus areas around Satam Talab in Circle Seven like Langer House, Tolichowki, Nanalnagar, Ahmednagar, Chintalbasti, Vijayanagar Colony, Mallepally and Red Hills.

Although there has been a drop in the number of dengue and malaria cases compared to last year, senior Municipal officials attribute it to the massive awareness campaign and various measures undertaken to check the menace of mosquitoes.

GHMC Chief Entomologist V. Venkatesh said a total of 524 cases of dengue were reported between January and November, 2012, while during the corresponding period this year, only 78 cases were noticed.

“There are fewer cases of malaria reported, too. This year there have been 129 as against 424 cases last year,” he added.

The GHMC has 138 portable fogging machines and 14 other bigger machines, which are in great demand. Officials, however, pointed out that while fogging helped control mosquito menace to a certain extent, it kills adult mosquitoes only.

Hence, it is imperative for citizens to follow preventive measures to arrest mosquito breeding.
