Even as six more nursing students are undergoing treatment for dengue in the Osmania General Hospital, the authorities, on Monday, blamed the faulty drainage system to be the reason behind the spate of dengue cases at the Osmania General Hospital (OGH).
Meanwhile, the nursing students admitted between October 31 and November 2 are said to be recovering. Last month, two students died after prolonged illness from dengue.
A team of entomologists and experts in vector-borne ailments from the office of District Health and Medical Office (DM&HO), who inspected the OGH hostel premises, recommended that the nursing students should be shifted to a better facility till the drainage system was rectified.
“The inpatient block at OGH and the nursing hostel are old and the drainage system is faulty The team of experts felt that this could be a reason for mosquito breeding. We have already asked the management to shift the students,” said DM&HO Dr. Narendrudu.
It’s not just nursing students, even the patients recovering at the inpatient block are prone to dengue, say authorities.
The doctors said that extensive screening of patients and healthcare workers in the hospital is now a regular practice and because of that they could detect dengue among students at the right time.
The nursing students suffering from dengue were Arjun, Kumar, Prashant, Laxman, Koteswari and Bhavani.
“As a precaution, we have kept them for a couple of days more and they will be discharged soon ,” doctors added.
Reluctance in vacating hostel
Meanwhile, the nursing students were reluctant to vacate hostel and shift to King Koti, which is outside the OGH campus.
“Most of the nursing students are girls and it is safe to stay on the OGH campus than outside it. The authorities should address the problem first,” says SFI city secretary M. Nageswara Rao.
