Metro Rail project overcame many hurdles, says N.V.S. Reddy

Bus services to provide seamless travel, creation of pedestrian facilities like sidewalks and introduction of bicycle stations part of HMR

By winning 190 of the 200-odd legal suits and transforming a project once written off by critics into winning prestigious international awards, the Hyderabad Metro Rail project has shown how to successfully overcome various hurdles, said its managing director N.V.S. Reddy on Friday.

Mr. Reddy addressed a team of 25 senior executives from Russia, Egypt, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Kenya, Ghana, Afghanistan, Burundi, Bhutan, Tanzania, etc. at the Metro Rail Bhavan on ‘enhancing leadership potential for organisational success’. The session was organised as part of the senior management training programme by the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI).

Tree translocation

Explaining the plantation drive, tree translocation, etc., taken up by the HMRL, he said that identifying employees’ potential and empowering them with proper strategies is a key component for achieving success. In a PowerPoint presentation, he highlighted the innumerable challenges faced by the Hyderabad Metro in handling religious/ sensitive structures, acquisition of properties to create right of way, handling agitations and vested interests, and shifting of utilities like water, sewer and electrical lines without disruption of day-to-day life in the city.

Mr. Reddy explained to them the need for vision, strategy, tact, patience and perseverance in handling challenges.
