The ongoing construction of Hyderabad Metro Rail will cover 86 junctions in the city but traffic police officials are confident that this will not affect the implementation of the Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (HTRIMS) across the city.
The Hyderabad Metro Rail officials, traffic police and the GHMC officials have exchanged maps and signals will be installed in such a way that the construction of metro rail will not affect the already installed signal posts, according to Additional CP (Traffic) C.V. Anand. “Those signals that will be disturbed by the construction process, will be restored by the metro rail authorities,” he explained.
The traffic police and the GHMC officials launched the first ‘model’ junction under HTRIMS at Jubilee Hills checkpost on January 31 and according to them 40 junctions will be upgraded by next month. HTRIMS will be installed in a total of 221 junctions in the city by this year end, Mr. Anand said.
He also said issues that resulted in the delay of implementing HTRIMS have been sorted out. “The specifications for the project have been finalised and Bharat Electronics Limited will carry out installation without further delay,” he said. Issues like choosing colour cameras over black and white cameras, including countdown timers and provision for video facilities have been ironed out.
“We had to settle for black and white cameras as the colour cameras would have incurred an extra cost of Rs. 1.2 crore. Also, countdown timers were not included in the original contract and hence we had to accommodate them by dropping five Variable Message Boards (VMS),” he said. A total of 20 VMS were to be installed in the city to provide real time information to the motorists about the traffic conditions in the city.
