Several key civic infrastructure projects for the city worth about Rs.1,500 crore have been help up due to the impasse in the functioning of the GHMC general body.

After the two recent truncated meetings of the GHMC council because of the Majlis party’s intransigent attitude towards swearing-in of BJP corporator C. Uday Kumar (Langar Houz), senior officials are now seeking the standing committee approval for sending the proposals directly to the government.

Seven works have already been sent like the new fish markets at Kukatpally, Nacharam and Begum Bazar, modernisation of the lakes, Musi modernisation project, IDL road-widening and junction work at Hi-tec City, totalling Rs. 800 crore.

Incidentally, the committee is presided over by Mayor Mohd. Majid Hussain. He has been in the forefront of the repeated postponement of the council meeting and has roped in the workers’ union, Telugu Desam and even the Congress, suitably.

Senior officials say that the Mayor is amenable to send the proposals directly to the government as some have been pending for the last nine months. The last council meeting was held in May 2012. The usual procedure is to clear the standing committee proposals at the general body before being sent to the government.

With repeated postponement of the general body meeting Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu and Engineer-in-Chief R. Dhan Singh have urged the standing committee to take the government’s sanction pending the council approval as it is mandatory for works to be grounded.

The 14 new projects put up for government’s approval are: sports complex at Moghulpura, Gowlipura, Adikmet and Golconda, skywalk feasibility at Secunderabad station, storm water repair on Shaikpet nala, bridges across the Musi at Ashoknagar, RTC crossroads, parallel road to Hafeezpet flyover, road from Banjara Hills Road No. 2 to Jubilee Hills Road No. 5 via Annapoorna Studio.

The other projects are: Inner ring road from Owaisi Hospital to Aramgarh junction, slab across nala at Kukatpally and storm water drain repair at Qayamnagar to Miralam tank, totalling Rs. 650 crore.
