The GHMC is on an energy conservation mission. In view of the power crisis looming over the State, the Corporation has decided to take steps to save at least 20 to 25 per cent of its power consumption working out to 5 million units per month.
GHMC commissioner, M.T. Krishna Babu, has listed out measures in tune with the directions of the Mayor, Mohammed Majid Hussain, to save power usage. Advertising agencies who have “lit hoardings” in the GHMC limits are told not to illuminate them until further instructions.
The Corporation will take serious view of those who fail to adhere to the instructions and initiate action against the violators. There are around 3,300 hoardings in GHMC limits. Of this 40 percent are lit boards and kiosks.
The Corporation has removed all the lollipops except in 4 to 5 stretches following the directions of court and the Mayor. Mr. Krishna Babu further instructed the maintenance staff of GHMC electrical wing to switch on the streetlights only after 7 pm as it is not getting darkened before 7 pm given the present seasonal conditions. The streetlights should be switched off before 5 am.
In several areas it is observed that the maintenance staff of electrical wing are switching on the streetlights by 5 pm and leaving them on up to 8 am in the morning. If the instructions are strictly followed it is possible to conserve power for two to three hours a day.
Presently GHMC is utilizing 20 million units of electricity per month for maintenance of streetlights, water supply to peripheral areas and for other purposes.
Mr. Krishna Babu directed officers concerned to conserve the power in their offices so that it can be utilized in domestic and agriculture sectors.
Court cases
The GHMC has proposed to replace all the electrical equipment with LED and CFL lamps and use LED lighting for streetlights in all the important roads. But this move is getting delayed because of court cases, a press release said.
The GHMC Commissioner directed the zonal commissioners, deputy municipal commissioners and the field level functionaries to monitor the implementation of these measures in their jurisdictions.
