The Punjagutta police on Monday caught a farmer for allegedly stealing money from a bank customer at Srinagar Colony last week.
The farmer K. Srinivas Reddy, alias Srinivas (39), hailing from Siddipet in Medak district committed the crime to pay the medical expenses of his wife undergoing treatment at NIMS.
On November 13, Srinivas went to the bank to withdraw money by submitting a cheque given by his friend to pay the medical bill, but the signature did not match.
Worried over the payment, Srinivas saw a person filling a bank document by keeping a cash bag on a table. Even as he was busy filling the document, Srinivas stole the bag containing Rs. 2.30 lakh and paid the medical bill.
Caught through footage
Punjagutta Detective Inspector K. Sattaiah Yadav said that Srinivas was caught with the help of footage captured in surveillance cameras installed in the bank.
“We verified his antecedents and found that he was not involved in any crimes earlier,” Detective Inspector said.
Financial problems
Police inquiries revealed that Srinivas was facing financial problems due to crop loss.
At the same time, his wife was admitted to NIMS after developing heath problems.
He then sought the help of his friend who gave him the cheque.
