Osmania University remained tense on Wednesday as scores of police personnel marched in and out of each hostel that housed leaders organising beef festival. While hundreds of student supporters of the festival were picked up without warning, the official count of detentions remained at 250.
Beef festival is scheduled to be held on Thursday.
The police action, which shocked the organisers and lay students, took place in the afternoon, soon after news broke that Hyderabad High Court upheld the ruling of City Civil Court that directed the varsity and parties involved to maintain status-quo on campus.
However, till before the arrests started students leaders and organisers of beef festival had maintained that they will continue with the festivities as per the intial plan. "If anyone coming to the university to attend the festival gets stopped by police, they should eat the beef delicacies which they bring with them on the spot," a student leader, David said during the media briefing.
Students said, as they haven't got a copy of the Civil or High Court orders they will conduct the festival on the campus using available resources.
