Following the unexplainable death of five women at Niloufer Hospital, the kin of the deceased alleged on Tuesday that they were forced to buy large quantities of blood. These allegations were denied by hospital staff.
It was now known that heavy bleeding following c-section surgeries performed between January 28 and February 4 on the women warranted infusion of blood products to save the women’s lives. Relatives of one of the deceased, identified as Anusha from Kukatpally, claimed that they were forced to spend thousands of rupees on purchase of blood.
Mujtaba Hasan Askari of Helping Hand Foundation that volunteers at the hospital said these allegations should be probed. He also pointed out that a check of blood products from external blood bank should be done during the course of investigation.
The hospital staff say any patient expenditure incurred for procuring blood products from outside the hospital, in case of insufficiency at the in-house blood bank, is reimbursed to the patient. They refuted the claims of the patients spending large amounts for the purpose.
