A 17-year-old from Santoshnagar, Syed Sameer, has alleged that he was tortured by Bhavaninagar police on Sunday night. He was reportedly detained and thrashed by the police in connection with a case of attempt to murder in which one of his acquaintances Rasheed was cited as an accused.
Sameer is now being treated at Princess Esra Hospital near Charminar for injuries on his legs. The victim alleged that he was picked by from his in-laws house at Edi Bazaar on Sunday night and taken to Santoshnagar ACP office, where he was beaten up. He was repeatedly asked about Rasheed, one of his acquaintances, who is wanted in a similar case at Nashemannagar.
“They accused me of helping Rasheed escape after the alleged attack. I pleaded innocence. I told them I did not meet him for the last one week,” Sameer said.
On coming to know about his detention, his family members, including women, rushed to Santoshnagar ACP office and sought his release. But the police personnel shifted him to Santoshnagar police station and beat him up using rubber belts and lathis , he alleged.
Sameer said he volunteered to point out to the police the house of Rasheed’s sister at Shaheen Nagar. En route to Shaheen Nagar, he was taken to Chandrayangutta police station, where he was tortured again.
When Rasheed surrendered before Bhavaninagar police in the early hours of Monday, Sameer was brought back to the station there.
“Though I had swelling on my feet due to the beating, police forced me to walk and jump,” he claimed.
Late on Monday, the police released Sameer, advising him to go to a doctor in Bhavaninagar, his mother Noorjahan Begum said.
“The police misbehaved with us and ransacked our house. Now they are talking of compromise and are also threatening us,” Noorjahan alleged. When contacted, Bhavaninagar police denied torturing or illegally detaining Sameer.
