A 22-year-old man drowned in the Hauz Khas deer park lake on Monday, the police said, adding that inquest proceedings have been initiated.
They are also questioning Manipur resident Horthan’s friends to ascertain if it was a case of suicide.
Pleas unheeded
Mr. Horthan and his two friends had gone to the park for a walk around 6 a.m., the police said. According to his friends, he suddenly ran towards the lake, took off his shirt and jumped in.
The friends called out repeatedly urging him to come to the lakeside.
When they failed to get a response, they informed the police.
Body sent for autopsy
The police and Fire Department personnel arrived at the spot and launched a rescue operation.
Mr. Horthan’s body was found a few hours later, the police said.
His body has been sent for post-mortem.
Mr. Horthan had come to Delhi in July in search of a job and was staying with his sister in Maharani Bagh.
Friends’ version
His friends allegedly told the police that they had consumed liquor the previous night and that he might have been under the inebriated at the time of the incident.
The police are waiting for the autopsy to confirm this.
No case has been registered so far, said the police.
