‘Why has JNU not yet approached court?’

The Delhi High Court on Friday asked JNU why it had not approached the court earlier even as its Administration Block has been occupied by the students since February 9.

Petition by students

Justice V.K. Rao was critical of the university not coming to court as it heard the plea of five students seeking removal of protesters so as to restore normal functioning at the institute, while also seeking their mark sheets for applying to various courses and job openings.

When the court asked JNU to provide documents to the M.Phil and Ph.D students, the university counsel submitted that the admin block had been blocked by the students and even the V-C hadn’t been able to enter his office.

He said police help would be required to enter the block.

The five students — Naveen Singh, Gaurav Kumar, Chandraveer Bhati, Shivendra Pandey and Ashish Singh — have claimed that since February 9, students have surrounded the admin block to protest against a UGC notification.

The matter has now been listed for February 20.
