Undertrial commits suicide in lock-up

A 34-year-old undertrial drug smuggler allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with his shirt inside the prison cell of Kota Narcotics Department office here.

Chandrashaker Patidar hanged himself from an iron angle inside the lock-up of the department office on Saturday, circle in-charge of Kota Narcotic Department, Dharm Singh Meena, said.

A judicial as well as a departmental inquiry into the case has been ordered, he said.

The smuggler was arrested on September 20 and was under custody by a court order.

He was arrested from his rented home in Mandsour district in Madhya Pradesh and drugs worth around Rs.5 crore were recovered from his possession, Mr. Meena said.

The smuggler was produced before a court which sent him to custody till September 28, following which he was locked up in prison cells in the Deputy Narcotic Commissioner officer in Kota.

A case under section 176 of CrPC was lodged in this connection and a judicial probe is under way, SHO of Jawaharnagar police station, Harish Bharti, said. - PTI
