: Transport Minister Gopal Rai took to the streets to oversee the enforcement of a citywide verification drive of four-wheelers bearing CNG vehicles here on Tuesday.
Mr. Rai had, on Saturday, announced the government’s decision to conduct the drive in response to reports that fake versions of these were up for purchase at some locations in the National Capital Region.
On Tuesday, however, only a negligible number of these could be found on vehicles verified by the Transport Minister who then proceeded to tear them off the wind shields of violators at ITO and Geeta Colony.
Meanwhile, a total number of 641 fines were issued by enforcement officials consisting of both Transport Department and Traffic Police personnel. On Monday, as many as 588 drivers had been fined.
In the run-up to the scheme, Mr. Rai had announced the government’s decision to keep a check on the unauthorised use of such stickers for the purpose of which mobile enforcement teams of ex-servicemen were supposed to be deployed, especially at border locations.
After the scheme took off on April 15, the government had also claimed that a spike in the volume of traffic on the Capital’s streets, consisting mainly of CNG-run cars registered in other States, had been noticed and was suspected to be in line with a “conspiracy to derail odd-even part II”. The government will also distribute 1,000 monitoring kits and randomly check cars for which a nodal officer, an official of Indraprastha Gas Limited, has been appointed.
