A traffic policeman was assaulted by a motorcyclist when he tried to stop him from breaching the security cordon in place to provide clear passage to the cavalcade of Vice-President Hamid Ansari near Vijay Chowk in India Gate earlier this week. The accused has been arrested.
The incident took place around 1-15 p.m. when Sub-Inspector Ishtyaq Ahmed was managing traffic at Vijay Chowk under the jurisdiction of the Parliament Circle. According to his complaint, the Vice-President’s cavalcade was on the move when he saw a motorcyclist coming towards Vijay Chowk from South Fountain. The traffic policemen deployed there waved at him to stop, but he turned towards Raisina crossing through Rajpath.
When the Sub-Inspector intercepted the motorcycle on Rajpath, the motorcyclist allegedly attacked the policeman and launched a volley of punches at him. This led to a scuffle between the two, in which the policeman’s uniform was allegedly torn and he sustained minor injuries.
The other policemen deployed nearby rushed to the spot and overpowered the accused. During interrogation, he identified himself as Mahendra Singh, a resident of Khichripur in East Delhi. He was subsequently arrested for assaulting and injuring a public servant on duty.
