A teenager in an Chevrolet Cruze rammed a tempo at high speed on Nelson Mandela Marg here in the early hours of Thursday, killing an elderly man on the spot and injuring three. Two of the injured are critical.

Fifty-year-old Ashok Chaudhary, who stayed in a jhuggi in Rangpuri, and six of his friends, all vegetable vendors, were returning home from a market in Vasant Vihar in a tempo when a teenager, later identified as Shivam (18), hit them from behind at high speed with his white car on Nelson Mandela Marg around 12-30 a.m.

The tempo overturned due to the impact of the accident and Ashok, travelling in its cabin alongside the driver, was flung out of the vehicle and came under its wheels. A Police Control Room vehicle took the injured to Fortis Hospital where Ashok was declared brought dead. The other injured – Mangru, Rajesh and Kishan – were later shifted to All-India Institute of Medical Sciences’ Trauma Centre.

Kishan, who sustained injuries on the chest, was discharged later in the day. But Mangru and Rajesh were shifted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and were said to be critical. “The two have sustained serious head injuries and were unconscious for several hours,” said Kishan, who is also a complainant in the case.

Shivam is a Class XII student and has been arrested. “He is a resident of Vasant Kunj and was driving at high speed causing the accident,” said a senior police officer. He has been booked for causing death to negligence, causing hurt and rash driving.
