‘Some people coming to Maidan drunk'

August 26, 2011 01:02 pm | Updated 01:02 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Though Anna's indefinite fast at Ramlila Maidan here has been free from any violence, there have been instances of people coming to the venue drunk.

“I was at the Maidan till the early hours of Thursday and I saw a group of people coming to the venue drunk. They were four-five in number and holding the Tricolour. They did not create any ruckus and later some volunteers escorted them out of the Maidan,” said Mahender Singh, a local resident, who had reached the Maidan around midnight amid reports of likely police action late at Wednesday night.

Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, a member of the Team Anna, had also referred to the menace in her speech and cautioned the supporters to be vigilant. She had made an appeal to the supporters gathered at the venue to escort such people out of the Maidan peacefully.

Earlier this week, over two dozen people in an inebriated state had entered into an altercation with some television journalists stationed at the Maidan as the latter refused to interview them.

The police had to be called in when they started hurling abuses at journalists and even tried to jump over the barricades.
