A year after the Narendra Modi government announced the Demonetisation scheme, several social organisations, journalists and trade associations came together on Wednesday to register their protest against the same.

‘Govt should apologise’

The public meeting and cultural programme held at the Press Club of India saw several people — including Thomas Franco of the All India Bank Officers’ Federation, Arbind Singh of the National Association of Street Vendors of India, Gauhar Raza, Umar Khalid — come together to speak on the issue.

Demanding compensation for the families of all those who lost their lives after the BJP government’s move, members of the People’s Campaign Against Demonetisation said: “We the people of India condemn this criminal stunt. The Modi government should apologise for the loss and destruction due to note ban and compensate the families of those who died. All the accused, including Ministers, should be tried and cases lodged in court.”

“We don’t want an undemocratic government which fools the people and is a puppet in the hands of the corporates. We reject such an economic demonetisation and want a government which is transparent and answerable to the people” they added.
