The principal of a public school in Narela had a narrow escape when he was shot at by two unidentified assailants within the school premises on Tuesday afternoon. The assailants fled from the spot after missing their target.
According to the police, they are now considering providing security cover to 48-year-old Ram Pal Tyagi, the principal of Daffodil Public School in Narela.
A police officer said the duo was questioned by a security guard about their purpose of visiting the school. “One of them told him they had come to take an admission form for his brother. Unconvinced and suspecting something amiss about their motive, the guard informed the principal who, in turn, directed one of the teachers to question the two young men,” he said.
Even as the teacher started talking to them, one of the two took out a pistol and shot at Mr. Tyagi, who was standing there. The bullet, however, missed the target and went on to hit a wall.
The accused immediately left the spot in the motor-cycle they had come in.
“We have collected footage from a CCTV camera and uploaded the suspects’ pictures into our data base and soon we will be able to identify the accused based on their past records. One of them, who wore a red-coloured T-shirt, is the one who allegedly fired the shot,” said a source.
The police revealed that several staff members, including the principal, were questioned following the incident. So far, the investigators have not been able to ascertain the motive behind the attack but have not ruled out a personal grudge.
