The accused in the Ryan International School murder case was on Tuesday sent to six days’ judicial custody. He will be produced in a Gurugram court on September 18.
Ghamroj village resident Ashok Kumar (42) was produced in First Class Judicial Magistrate M. Z. Khan’s court in Sohna around 1 p.m. and sent to judicial custody.
“He was in police remand for three days. The police did not seek further remand. They told the court that he had bought the knife from Agra,” said advocate Sourabh Raghav, who has been appointed by the court to represent Ashok.
Ashok will now be produced before the Sessions Judge, special court for crime against women and children, in a Gurugram court since the First Class Judicial Magistrate does not have jurisdiction to try a case where the offence is punishable with imprisonment for a term exceeding three years.
Advocate comes forward
The Gurugram District and Sohna Bar Associations had earlier condemned the murder in separate meetings and decided not to represent the accused. However, advocate and Rohtak Bar Association member Mohit Verma has come forward saying he will represent Ashok.
“He is only an accused and not a convict. He too has the right to defence. I decided to represent him after a friend contacted me in this connection. I met his family on Tuesday and will meet him in jail on Wednesday,” said Mr. Verma.
Meanwhile, Gurugram SDM B. B. Gogia said it was decided after a marathon meeting with parents and principals of Sectors 31 and 40 branches of Ryan International School branches to open the schools.
