April 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - Dehradun:

In letters to the Central government Chief Minister Harish Rawat has requested for financial assistance for the farmers whose crops were damaged in the inclement weather and incessant rains.

In the letters addressed to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh, Mr. Rawat mentioned details on the crop damage.

The State government had decided to bear the interest on the loans taken by the farmers till September 2015, which was around Rs.950 crore.

“If the Central government reduces the interest on the loans taken by farmers, or, bears the loan amount, then it would be of immense help to them,” Mr. Rawat’s letter to the Union Finance Minister stated.

Mr. Rawat further stated that Uttarakhand was a ‘Special Category’ State and that it should get assistance from the Centre in the ratio of 90:10.

In his letter to the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr. Rawat requested that a team be sent from the Centre to assess the extent of damage to the crops across the State, and compensation must be provided by the Centre to the affected farmers.
