Even as the uncertainty over government formation in Delhi continues, State unit president of the Bharatiya Janata Party Satish Upadhyay reiterated on Sunday that “his party is open to government formation” and will “get the numbers when the time comes.”

Speaking to reporters after meeting Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh at his residence, Mr. Upadhayay said: “The party is ready both for government formation as well as contesting fresh elections. If we are invited [by the Lieutenant-Governor] to explore government formation, we will proceed accordingly.”

Replying to a specific question from where will the BJP manage to get the required numbers to prove its majority, Mr. Upadhyay said: “This is not the right time to talk about numbers. We will let you know how we will get them when time comes.”

Mr. Upadhyay’s meeting with the Home Minister assumes significance as it comes at a time when political circles in the city is abuzz with the BJP’s efforts towards forming a government.

While the Congress paraded its legislators before the media on Saturday to quell speculations of any split in the party, the Aam Aadmi Party has alleged horse trading in the past stating that the BJP “is trying to poach legislators both from the AAP and the Congress.”

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party alleged on Sunday that “the double meaning statements and consistent U-turns by the BJP on the current political situation in Delhi makes it clear that it is running away from facing fresh elections.”

“The party wants to resort to the ‘Aaya Ram Gaya Ram’ culture of politics, against which the Supreme Court of India had warned on April 17 this year,” it said.

A day after some Congress MLAs alleged that AAP leaders had approached them to join hands once again to form government, the AAP on Sunday attacked the Congress party leadership for “not clarifying its stand on dissolution of the Assembly.”

“The stunned silence of the Congress on whether it is willing to officially communicate in writing to the Lieutenant-Governor and the Supreme Court that the Delhi Assembly be dissolved proves it is indirectly supporting the BJP’s ‘Aaya Ram Gaya Ram’ brand of politics.”
