A brief exchange of fire between a PCR team and a gang of robbers early on Wednesday morning ended with an arrest, police said.

The suspects were loading copper bundles into a car at Lajpat Rai Market near Red Fort around 2.15 am on Wednesday when a patrolling PCR team caught them.

The suspects drove away without offering the police a satisfactory reply.

All PCR vehicles deployed in the area were alerted immediately.

With the police on their trail, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the PCR van near Yamuna Bazar.

As the offending vehicle reached the Ring Road, another PCR van chased it till the Seelampur traffic signal. With the signal turning red and some vehicles coming to a halt ahead, the robbers were left with no escape. The PCR team then rammed their vehicle into the robbers’ car, causing it to overturn.

“The suspects abandoned the vehicle and disappeared into the streets nearby. Our team ran behind them and caught one robber, Rohit,” said Ranvir Singh, Additional CP (Operations).

A search of the car led to the recovery of around 30 copper bundles and a live cartridge. The car itself was reportedly stolen from Seemapuri. Police are looking for the absconding accused.
