The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre, the Delhi Government and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on a special leave petition seeking a direction to provide drinking water and toilet facilities at metro stations.
A Bench of Justices Deepak Verma and Ibrahim Kalifulla issued the notices on the SLP filed by Satish Kumar Sharma and directed that this SLP be tagged with a similar petition filed by an NGO seeking basic amenities at metro stations.
The petitioner submitted that since water and toilets were available at all airports and railway stations, metro travellers could not be deprived of similar facilities.
“There has been a tremendous development on metro connectivity lines, so much so that a commuter travels 40 km to 60 km everyday over several hours without having the benefit of any water or toilet facilities at platforms. Though the DMRC has provided various other facilities, it has not provided the most important facilities of drinking water and toilets on metro stations and it is causing a lot of inconvenience to the public at large,” the petition says.
