Taking cognisance of the stampede incident at the railway station here in May, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Railway Board Chairman and Northern Railways General Manager asking them to submit a report, including details of compensation to families of the victims, within four weeks.
The Commission took cognisance of the case on the basis of a complaint filed by rights activist and lawyer Prabir Kumar Das.
On May 16, two persons were killed and eight injured in a stampede triggered by a last minute change in platforms for two trains at the New Delhi Railway Station.
Mr. Das, in his complaint, alleged that the stampede took place due to negligence of Railway officials.
Seeking the Commission’s intervention in the matter, Mr. Das prayed for an inquiry into the incident and action against “negligent” officials besides compensation for the victims.
