Minority Commission of India chairman Naseem Ahmed visited Dingerheri village in Mewat district of Haryana on Thursday and met the victims of the gang-rape incident.
The visit came a week after former Haryana Transport Minister Aftab Ahmed wrote a letter to the commission seeking its intervention into the twin issues of collection of biryani samples and the gang-rape of two Muslim women in Dingerheri last month.
Petition pending
Mr. Ahmed told The Hindu over the phone that a petition in connection with the Dingerheri gang-rape was pending before the commission and he decided to visit the village after the Haryana government submitted a report in this connection on Wednesday. “The government has in its report given details about the incident, the investigation and the arrest of the four accused. The report also said that the quantum of compensation to the victims has been doubled to Rs.45 lakh. The entire compensation money is likely to be distributed to the victims by today [Thursday] evening,” said Mr. Ahmed.
Report to come soon
He further said that he interacted with the locals, the victims and the local administration in connection with the incident and a report with recommendations would be ready in the next couple of days.
The report will also be put on the website of the commission.
Senior administration officials and Mr. Aftab Ahmed were also present during the minority panel chief’s visit and interaction with the villagers.
Mr. Ahmed said that the commission would take up the biryani samples matter separately after it receives a report from the Haryana government in this connection.
