Miffed over his marriage being called off by the fiancée’s family, a 24-year-old man slashed the nose of the girl’s brother in Pitampura. He and his friends also allegedly assaulted some members of the girl’s family.
However, the man and one of his associates were caught by the victims’ neighbours. The two were then thrashed before being handed over to the police.
“The decision to marry the victim’s sister to the accused, Raghu, was taken about one-and-a-half years ago. However, the two families had a quarrel over the marriage preparations on April 8, just weeks before the wedding was to be solemnised. At that time, Raghu had roughed up the girl’s father at his home after which her family called off the wedding,” a police officer said.
On Sunday night, he and his three friends allegedly arrived at her home in a drunken state.
Raghu wanted to meet the girl but her family members turned down his request. Suspecting trouble, the girl’s brother Kamlesh Rakaiwar went to their neighbour’s home to call the police control room (PCR), but could not connect.
“When I entered my home, Raghu demanded that he be allowed to meet my sister. When I said no, he pulled out a paper knife and slashed my nose,” Mr. Rakaiwar told the police.
After this, Raghu and his friends allegedly thrashed his mother and stabbed one of their relatives in his arm.
Two of them managed to escape, but Raghu and his friend Vikas were caught by the neighbours who had gathered outside on hearing their screams for help.
They were thrashed by the mob even as the police were informed. A PCR van arrived at the spot to shift Kamlesh and the other injured to hospital.
The suspects have been booked for the crime.
