A 43-year-old businessman who was taken to Keshav Puram police station after he picked a quarrel with his neighbour died following a fatal heart attack on Wednesday morning. Two policemen have been suspended for negligence.

Kulbhushan Chaturvedi lived in Tri Nagar. His family alleged that a minor from the neighbourhood was consuming alcohol in front of their house on Tuesday night and Mr. Chaturvedi got into a scuffle with him over the issue. Protesting outside the police station, his family claimed the policemen ignored his request for medical assistance even after he complained of chest pain.

“They thought it was a prank. I took my brother to a hospital, where he was declared dead,” said his elder brother.

The police received a call regarding a quarrel between two groups near Tri Nagar old bus station at 11.46 p.m. Policemen on bike patrol reached the spot and took both the parties to the police station. The minor alleged that he was beaten by the victim and demanded a medical examination. The boy was examined at 12.52 a.m. and brought back to police station as he wanted to register a first information report against the deceased. Nearly 20 locals reached the police station by then to resolve the issue amicably.

“Both parties were discussing the matter when Mr. Chaturvedi complained of uneasiness and chest pain around 1.30 a.m. He was given water but his condition deteriorated. A relative took him to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead at 2.30 a.m.,” said Delhi Police spokesperson Dependra Pathak, adding that his body was handed over to his family after the post-mortem.

An Assistant Commissioner of Police has been directed to probe the incident, he said.

“A case under IPC Section 304 has been registered at Keshav Puram police station on a complaint by his brother. The case has been transferred to the Crime Branch. Action will be taken after we receive the post-mortem report,” he added.
