A 50-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by his younger brother over a property dispute in North-West Delhi’s Bhalaswa Dairy on Friday. The victim Gulab Singh Sisodia was a volunteer with the Aam Admi Party. The incident took place at the accused Charan Singh’s farm house in Mukundpur where the two brothers were preparing to do the “tehrawin”, the post-cremation rites of their recently deceased mother who owned the property.
The accused Charan Singh (38) as well as his immediate family members are currently on the run and efforts are being made to arrest him, said the police.
According to the police, soon after the death of their mother, the relationship between Charan and his four brothers had soured. “The inheritance feud was mainly over a plot registered on her name and her post office account, which had Rs.18 lakh in it. Charan was unwilling to share either of these with Gulab and his other brothers,” said a police officer.
On the day of the incident, the accused had called his brothers to his farmhouse to discuss the issue and find out an amicable solution as well as plan the post-cremation rites ceremony of their mother, which is scheduled on June 23.
The officer said the brothers consumed alcohol and entered an argument over the possession of the plot.
“An enraged Charan then asked one of his domestic helps to fetch his country-made firearm kept in the house. He first fired a bullet in the air and then one aimed at his second eldest brother Gulab. He also tried to shoot his other brothers, but they managed to escape unhurt,” said the officer.
Following the incident, Charan along with his wife and children left the house before the police arrived.
While the police said they were not aware of the victim’s association with the AAP, party MLAs Rajesh Garg and Sanjeev Jha visited Gulab’s house to express condolences. Mr. Garg and other party workers have also demanded that the accused be arrested as soon as possible.
